Daniel Webster (January 18, 1782 – October 24, 1852) was an American lawyer and statesman who represented New Hampshire and Massachusetts in the U.S. Congress and served as the U.S. Secretary of State under Presidents William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, and Millard Fillmore. William Willard (1819-1904) of Sturbridge, Mass., was a jeweler's apprentice in Worcester, Mass., before becoming an artist, and an instructor at the School of Fine Arts in Boston. From 1837 until 1903, Willard painted the portraits of many prominent men, including Daniel Webster (1782-1852) and Charles Sumner (1811-1874).
